They know that people don't keep diaper receipts nor do stores give "gift receipts" for diapers. They may also give you store credit if you explain your situation to a manager (that your baby is premature and you are unsure when the baby will come home and what size you will need, etc) Otherwise if you are doing a straight swap I'd recommend not getting more than 1 pack of the newborn and size 1s. Some babies race through these sizes, and of course some don't. I think most people need a lot more in the size 2-3 range though.
